Calgary Soroptimists Ask "Do You Have a Dream?" – International Organization Participates in Worldwide Campaign to Help Women and Girls
Calgary, Canada, April 26, 2012 –(PR.com)– “What’s your dream?” is what Calgary Soroptimists would like to ask all women and girls. Then they want to encourage those women and girls to live their dream. The club is a part of Soroptimist International of the Americas, an international volunteer organization for business and professional women that sponsors the “Live Your Dream Campaign,” which aims to raise awareness of the issues women face and what can be done to help them.
"Many women and girls are trapped in lives of poverty, discrimination, domestic abuse and sexual violence," explains Sharon Miller, president of the Calgary Soroptimist club. "The Live Your Dream campaign sheds light on these issues and raises funds to provide local women and girls with the resources they need to build a better life."
Throughout the world, women and girls face unique challenges. While they represent about one-half of the world's population, women suffer disproportionately from many societal problems. Approximately 70 percent of the 1.3 billion people who live on $1 a day are women. More women between the ages 15 and 44 die due to gender-based violence than cancer, malaria, car accidents and war combined. About 90 million girls around the world are deprived of primary education. These are but a few statistics illuminating the severe disadvantages facing many women and girls.
Proceeds from the campaign will benefit Soroptimist programs, including the Women's Opportunity Awards, which provides cash grants to women seeking to improve their economic situation through additional training and/or education. Often, just a little help is all a woman needs to turn her life around. "Not only did the Women's Opportunity Award help me financially, but it made me realize there are people out there who are rooting for me to succeed," said a recent award recipient. "Though I struggle every day, this award gave me the power to believe in myself and the confidence I needed to make a better life for me and my daughter. I am well on my way to achieving my dreams.”
Soroptimist sponsors the Live Your Dream campaign in recognition of the power of women and their dreams. Tickets can be purchased online at www.soroptimistcalgary.org.
